BACKGROUND According to the American Heart Association, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) affects between 12% and 20% of Americans age 65 and older. It leads to tens of thousands of amputations annually in the United States alone.
PerAssist is developing Peri-Boost, a device based on an innovative method to improve blood flow to the lower limbs of patients suffering from PVD. Peri-Boost offers a viable treatment option for patients facing lower limb amputation due to complications of advanced PAD, patients who are not candidates for angioplasty, atherectomy, or bypass.
TECHNOLOGY The proprietary Peri-Boost sleeve is fitted around a major intact, healthy blood vessel proximal to the diseased peripheral region (usually the femoral or iliac arteries). Adjacent to the Peri-Boost sleeve is a small balloon that inflates and deflates as required from an external control device attached to the implanted sleeve. Synchronization between Peri-Boost and the patient’s heartbeats is optimized so that blood flow to the lower extremities is maximized, while at the same time prevented from flowing in reverse.
Peri-Boost features --
- Treatment can last for up to three months to allow the affected area to heal naturally
- Sleeve may remain in place for future use if peripheral vessels become re-occluded
- Implant may be placed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure
- Treatment period is painless and does not infringe on patient’s lifestyle
Peri-Boost has the potential to dramatically reduce the rising number of PVD patients who undergo lower limb amputation due to the inadequate treatment options available.
